石油煉化領域，天然氣、合成氣、乙烯等原料常用于生產很多化工產品(例如氨、甲醇、環氧乙烷等)，這些原料氣中可能含有有害硫化合物(例如硫化氫)。鑒于貴金屬催化劑易遭受硫中毒，通常反應裝置對進料硫含量(硫化氫)有嚴格地要求，一旦硫含量超標，將導致催化劑不可逆性中毒，因此需要對進料采用活性炭凈化處理，以去除低濃度的硫化氫或其他低分子量硫化物，防止催化劑失活和壽命縮短。
